STORY OUTLINE
With Covid restrictions finally behind them, Live at the Point returns to the Godley House grounds in Diamond Harbour and The Gingernuts are determined to make their long-awaited debut.
Unfortunately, the hours leading up to the performance descend into chaos. Weasley suffers an eye injury, Squeak receives an accidental burgundy makeover, and Ron becomes distracted by both Cookie and his increasingly grand musical ambitions. When the trio eventually take the stage, Squeak unexpectedly transforms from the group’s most sensible member into a fully-fledged rock star, leaving Weasley to wonder exactly where his “wim oh wehs” are supposed to fit into proceedings.
The story blends small-town humour, musical parody and feline absurdity against the backdrop of one of Diamond Harbour’s best-loved community events.
BACKGROUND
The events in this story were originally part of a longer chapter called The Gingernuts. When The Woes of Weasley – The Diary of an Orange Cat was being prepared for publication, the material naturally divided into two separate stories: the formation of the band and their eventual appearance at Live at the Point.
The story is inspired by the real Live at the Point music sessions held on the grounds of Godley House in Diamond Harbour. These popular outdoor events bring together local musicians and residents in a beautiful harbour setting and have become an important part of the local community calendar.
THE REAL CATS
This episode contains several details inspired by real events. The real Squeak belonged to a friend who worked as a sound engineer and later provided sound for Live at the Point. In one of those strange occasions where real life proves stranger than fiction, Squeak had a habit of waking his owner by banging his paws on the sound speakers in the house. That behaviour found its way almost unchanged into this story.
The beautiful Cookie also makes another appearance, continuing her role as the object of Ron’s affections, while Weasley’s “Gene Simmons” moment was inspired by the idea of a cat suddenly finding himself in the middle of a rock concert he never expected to be part of.
